Urine-Diverting Composting Toilet

This project explores a simple and practical urine-diverting composting toilet — designed to work effectively without water, chemicals, or complex systems. And in fact use the “waste” as a resource for growing. By separating liquid and solid waste, the setup helps keep materials dry, which significantly reduces odors and makes the waste easier and safer to manage.

The design focuses on accessibility and simplicity, using readily available materials and straightforward construction methods. An optional extraction fan can be added to help draw air through the system, keeping it fresh and functional. Like many of the projects shared here, this has been an evolving process — learning, adapting, and refining the design over time.

Urine-diverting systems offer a more mindful approach to sanitation, especially in off-grid or low-impact settings. They allow waste to be managed responsibly, and where appropriate, returned safely to the natural cycle.

This design is intended to be repairable, adaptable, and open to further development, with the possibility of evolving certain components into open-source designs that can be used in other systems.

In time I intend to upload drawings and more details but for now here is a video of the build. If you’d like more details on the build, materials used, or how to adapt this system to your own setup, feel free to reach out via the Contact page — always happy to connect and share further.
